John Ngugi is a Kenyan former long-distance runner who was born on March 10, 1962. He is regarded as one of the greatest long-distance runners of all time. He was the first man to win five world cross country titles, and he also won the 5000m gold at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Ngugi set a world record in the 5000m in 1985 and is also a three-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist and a two-time African Games gold medalist. In 1989, he tested positive for a banned substance and received a two-year ban, which caused him to miss the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Ngugi retired from competitive running in 1997 and has since become a farmer in his native Kenya.
